The beauty of a jade egg

For those of you who've know me for a while, you will know that I both teach and practice jade egg, and also that the yoni egg is one of my favourite ways to help women embody and nurture pleasure.

One of the reasons for this is that I am a sucker for anything that looks beautiful.

(And it’s surely hard to argue that jade eggs are by far the most aesthetically pleasing sex toy of all. Caveat - of course, they aren't just a sex toy. Yoni eggs have been used for centuries and are part of an ancient Taoist Tantric tradition that incorporates female sexuality, energetic balance and overall health.)

Over and above their beauty though,  jade eggs are effective and awesome to use - and for all these reasons they appear to have survived the test of time. All the more pleasure for us. I say 🙂 So read on if you want to hear more about this tradition, and how it can help your sex and wellbeing to open and flourish. (And also how your sex and wellbeing are so intimately connected.)

THE YONI EGG IS AWESOME BECAUSE:

It's super easy to work with – a yoni egg is such a good entry point to working with your pleasure.

It's connected to a deeply feminine sense of tradition

It feels reel really gorgeous internally

What is the yoni egg used for?

As I mentioned, the yoni egg or jade egg is a tool that has been the historical long distance, As such has been used by women interested in exploring their inner sexual world for hundreds of years. It originated in China  – where jade was  known as hardened dragon sperm. (I mean, I guess that either floats your boat or it doesn’t. For me though it suggests the inherent power of the thing. Love me a bit of dragon 🙂 )

Since ancient times then, the egg has been used as a part of the wider Taoist tradition. You could say it is the feminine arm of the school of Chinese tantra and as I mentioned already, is one part of a holistic system of health and well-being. To the Chinese, who categorically understood that a vibrant sexuality in a woman was paramount for her overall health, a sexual tool is not separate from being a healing tool for body and mind. That is something I deeply love about jade egg work – it is so holistic.

Luckily for us all in the modern age, one living Taoist Master – Mantak Chia -  resurrected interest in the West for the egg from his school in Thailand. Over the years this has spurred a whole plethora of highly trained jade egg teachers - and I am proud to be a part of that movement. Having learned my practice from this line.

3 main benefits of the yoni egg

Muscular

Hormonal

Energetic

Most women mistakenly think that the only use for a jade egg is physiological - because, quite rightly, it is known for how well it tones conditions the muscles of the vagina and pelvic floor. These benefits are not to be underestimated - I have taught many women who have found issues of sensation and/or pain to be eradicated through ongoing practice in this area. The sex organs are, essentially, muscles. And like any muscle, they respond to the right kind of attention - they strengthen and relax at the same time. The jade egg is famous for helping with urinary incontinence for example. And it can, with great skill and sensitivity, even help reverse prolapse or other more serious issues. (Another caveat - gently does it in these cases.)

A part of any sexual practice is of course hormonal too. For example, yoni egg practice will stimulate certain hormones within your body such as oxytocin and dopamine. And frankly, I don't know about you, but I can't get enough of that kind of feel good. It is possible then to rediscover your turn on and zest for life as a result of this.

The energy body is obviously much harder to pin down and prove - although of course science is catching up with those of us who just know how to feel energy both in ourselves and in others and the world around us. But the jade egg  works spectacularly with generating and circulating sexual energy around the body - both as a source of pleasure and of health.

are yoni eggs safe?

As you are probably aware - there's been so much controversy over Jade eggs in the past few years. You may have heard the whole Gwyneth Paltrow story where her lifestyle  organization Goop was sued for promoting, selling and misinforming the public about the yoni egg. Truthfully, there seems to be one doctor in particular hellbent on a mission to discredit any benefits of jade egg usage. This has led to an entire rash of articles warning you from using one - just search on the Internet and you'll find “don't go putting Jade in your vagina” articles are ten a penny.

I have to admit I find this passionate lobby against the jade egg to be quite curious. Because, let’s face it, nobody is alarmed about the risk of toxic shock syndrome with your average sex toy. There are no articles all over the website about how bacteria can get into your common garden dildo, for example. (Both plastic and rubber are porous.) So it stands to reason that hygiene is just as important with those types of toys as with anything else.

Whilst you might assert that with jade eggs it is the length of time they stay in your vagina that makes them dangerous (and more about that later), there are no such movements against the use of tampons. Or moon cups.  Clear risk data is stated on the packaging of tampons for example. But consumers are left to decide for themselves whether the risks outweigh the benefits or not. Why not with jade eggs too then? Why all the outrage and vitriol?

With my Jade egg packages - as with any reputable teacher - the egg comes with basic instructions on how to clean and take care of your egg so that it stays and remains safe to use internally. I want to quickly add that high-quality jade is completely non-porous too, so unlike tampons which absorb vagina fluids and fester from the length of time that they are left inside. Today no one I know has ever heard of anybody contracting toxic shock syndrome from jade egg usage. And we are talking about thousands of women who have been through jade egg courses over the past few years.

Just to be on the safe side though, I work with my clients to keep the egg in for a limited amount of time. Yet still there are some women who will sleep with the egg or will leave the egg in for longer periods of time. (None of those have got ill either.)

Plus, I am of the general opinion that every source of information has it's own innate bias. Including some scientific ones. Including mine. Scientists are not immune. Nothing is truly objective in the end.

So, trust your instinct, basically, is my motto.

It really is the source of your power.

can you sleep with your yoni egg in?

Which brings us to the above.

As I already mentioned, I don't personally recommend keeping the yoni egg in for huge lengths of time. Normally in a jade session with a woman in my private practice would last for an hour to an hour and half tops. (Women either do their practice before their zoom session with me. Or, with cameras off, we would go through a jade egg session together.)

Some women do love to sleep with a yoni egg, of course. So in the end I would leave it up to you and ultimately to your inner knowing. You pussy always knows best.

how long should you leave your yoni egg in?

The audio practices on my online jade course are shorter than the private sessions – generally about 30-40 minutes each.

In the beginning of your practice, and especially if your muscles are weak internally, or in significant pain, it can be hard to keep your egg in when you're standing up anyway. However, as your muscles become more toned and healthier, you could potentially leave the egg for a while if you wanted to.

Once again, I would say trust your intuition on this. My teacher Layla Martin told a story once of how she was walking around Los Angeles feeling a huge amount of turn on one day, and started wondering why. I mean, Layla Martin is one powerful, turned on lady - but that day even she was noticing the increase in sexual heat.

It turned out that she realized that she had forgot to take the egg out!

how do you get your yoni egg out?

Rest assured though, getting the egg out is easier than it sounds. I remember an old friend of mine who warned me against venturing into jade egg territory, saying that she had once inserted an egg and was completely unable to get it out again. However, alarming though this might be to you, in practice this comes down to plain stupidity. Any reputable course or teacher will give you clear instructions on how to insert and how to remove. Every yoni egg has a hole drilled through it, and it is through this hole that you can slot your sterile string or thread or whatever you decide to use. At the end of your session, you just pull it out like a tampon.

(Sometimes if you climax strongly with the egg inside the muscles can be quite tight around the egg, and it can take a little bit more relaxing to let it release in my experience.)

Apart from my friend then, I have never heard of an egg being stuck inside someone and would not anticipate ever hearing that again either. Rest assured the egg cannot travel any further inside you than your cervix, so it is prevented from going to areas that it really shouldn't by the flawless design of the female sexual anatomy.

(It goes without saying then, that this is also why you should never use an egg anally – there is no cervix to prevent it getting lost up there!)

more yoni egg adventures

I have to admit it is not just the feel of the egg, it is not just the tradition and the exercises around it, which have been so beneficial in my life and the lives of countless other women I know. But it is also the sense that you are part of a deeply feminine lineage when you use it.

Not so long ago another jade egg teacher friend of mine and I went to a restaurant in London Bridge where we had heard that there was a Kuan Yin statue standing proudly like a feminine restaurant overlord. Or overlady. (Kuan Yin is the Goddess of compassion - frequently cited as being the guardian of all. things jade egg.)

As serendipity would have it, this restaurant was also at the top of the Shard building (which is a very famous obelisk shaped building in London.) Just sat the on the banks of the River Thames (or Isis) and built in the same area that the ancient Roman temple of Isis was constructed in. Oooh we felt ever so witchy with our jade eggs to go up that the elevator, in this Egyptian shaped building on the site of ancient Egyptian goddess worship in London, to hunt down and tune into the famous goddess statue of Kuan Yin on the 30th something floor.

As we sat and shared and drunk over priced non-alcoholic cocktails, we talked about our jade egg experiences, which for both of us have uncovered - not only a heightened sexual experience - but also a deeper rhythm that dances to the tune of the feminine in our very own bodies.

Lineage is one of the things the jade egg has brought me that I feel the most grateful for.

Here’s what some previous participants had to say about working with me and the jade egg:

SN

London

During the course I felt connected with self love, self awareness and pleasure in a way I could not have imagined given my past traumas and their continued effects. This brought me huge hope and confidence. Julia’s facilitation was clear, thorough and compassionate, and I particularly valued how she encouraged listening to and responding to our ‘no’s as much as our ‘yes’es which had subtle and powerful effects for me and helped me feel much more connected with my body and excited about my relationship with myself.

Anne-Louise

Denmark

I’ve done the Jade course with Julia and I loved it. Julia has a deep knowledge of the practice she teaches and her love for the practice and her desire to transmit it to other women radiate through the whole course. I’ve come out of the course with more love for my body and my age and I’ve learnt practises that I can use to connect to myself and womanhood for the rest of my life. Tapping into Julia’s wisdom has been both exciting and nourishing and I’ve felt Julia’s support throughout the process.

GH

London

I realized how easy it is for me to forget about my own sexual pleasure and connecting with it regularly. This is what I loved about the course- every week I would meet with 8 wonderful women who had all decided to prioritise their pleasure. Julia taught us simple tools and practices, to slowly build that connection to our pleasure seeking nature. Julia has such a wealth of knowledge, and a steady, loving, presence that holds everyone together. I loved learning practices, from someone who clearly loves what they do as you can feel it!! After the course, I am now implementing the tools and practices into my life and as a result, feeling more grounded, more connected to my body and more pleasure than before!

certified jade eggs

One last thing – if you want to just simply purchase an egg from me then you can do that too!

It is worth mentioning that the eggs I sell are certified by their GIA, and are of the highest quality.

In order to tell if this is the case, you want to inspect your egg for blemishes or chips - it should have none. You also want to touch and feel the jade egg - because truly high quality jade feels very waxy and dense to touch. It also feels heavy in hand (which is also of course why it feels so good in the vagina). And finally, the colour should be stable and not rub off.

Grab your eggs here.
